My name is Michelle Barkenbus, and when I experienced my 3 year old son complete the Infant Aquatic Survival course I knew I had found my calling. I was so amazed at the methods used and the results achieved that I decided to become an IAS instructor.
Growing up in South Africa, I was always around the water; and like some of our students, I could swim before I could walk. In more recent years, I certified as a PADI Rescue Scuba Diver and have traveled extensively, experiencing the waters of some of the most beautiful locations in the world.
I recently became an American citizen, after moving to the US six years ago where I met and married my husband, Charles. We now live in Longmont with our son Elan.
After deciding to become an IAS swimming instructor, I completed an intensive 100+ hours, in water, hands on training/certification program with a master instructor where I successfully learned to teach infants and children swimming and survival skills. In addition, I have completed academic study in the areas of child development, behavioral psychology and infant physiology. I also hold certifications in infant, child, and adult CPR and First Aid.
Infant Aquatics Ft Collins offers swimming lessons that actually teach your child to swim and survive in the water, with results in weeks instead of years. I welcome the opportunity to provide your children with the aquatic survival skills necessary to promote a lifelong love of swimming and water activities.
All new students receive 4 private 10 minute lessons each week, Monday through Thursday for 4 to 6 weeks before progressing into once weekly 30 minute group classes

How long does the program take?
New students: Infants under one year, 4 week commitment
Children 12 months and up, 6 week commitment
What is the cost?
Infants under one year - $420
4 weeks - 16 private lessons
Includes $100 registration fee
Children over one year - $580
6 weeks - 24 private lessons
Includes $100 registration fee
$50 discount for siblings registered at the same time
How do I enroll?
- Call Michelle to arrange lesson observation
- Fill out registration file at pool and pay the non-refundable $100 fee ($50 for siblings) to secure a slot on the schedule
- Reserve a time slot for your child
How Soon Can We Start?
We start new students every Monday, whenever there are openings on the schedule. Once the schedule is full, your child will be placed on a waiting list.
When Can We Join a Group Class?
Upon completion of private lessons, all students are encouraged to join a group class for retention, enjoyment and skill enhancement. The cost of the session will be pro-rated according to the number of weeks remaining in the current session.
