My name is Natalie Abel and I am the proud mother of four school-age children. My interest in water safety for young children has developed over the course of many years and is partly in response to the tragic loss of my parents and younger sister in an automobile accident more than 13 years ago. I was a new mother at the time of the accident and became highly protective of my 5 month-old son in response to such a tragic personal experience.
After my family's accident, I became very aware of potential dangers in my child's environment, which included family swimming pools that were and were not secured with safety gates and other devices. When my son was three years-old I decided to enroll him in a water self-rescue class in an effort to protect him from the potential danger of drowning.
I became very committed to water safety for children, and subsequently enrolled my other children in the same program. My three oldest completed their training without much difficulty; however, my youngest was very resistant to the swim instruction and would become extremely upset at the mention of the lessons. Watching him struggle with the harsh techniques used in lessons and become increasingly fearful of the water, I knew that there had to be a gentler way to teach children these lifesaving skills. I started researching programs that taught the same survival techniques with a more caring approach and discovered the difference when I found Liz Walker with Infant Aquatics. After only two weeks of lessons with Liz, my once fearful 4 year old was swimming safely and with enthusiam. Using the creative techniques I learned during my training as an Infant Aquatics instructor, I hope not only to provide my students with water safety skills, but to take them to the next level in their swimming development.
Water activities in Southern California are part of a lifestyle. I have lived in San Diego all my life and plan to continue to do so, and I have also recognized that there is a need for more certified instructors in our area to increase water safety. I have a personal commitment to teach aquatic survival skills and water enjoyment to my community and am excited to share my passion with others.
I am a member of United States Swim Schools Association and am certified in adult, child and infant CPR and First aid.
